Nearly zero fresh produce at home. Dreaded flipping through grocery store flyers, and realized the clear choice on this gorgeous day was a farmers’ market. But how far would one have to trek on a Sunday?
As far as Square One. An Internet search yielded results and hours (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) for the Mississauga Lions Farmers’ Market at 3 Robert Speck Pkwy.
THE LIST Eggplant, cauliflower, zucchini, red peppers.
IMPULSE BUYS Two baskets of peaches, field cucumbers, yellow peppers.
SAMPLES Endless fruit, salad dressing, and kombucha.
BEST DEAL Two eggplants priced at $1 apiece. The vendor reduced them to $0.75 “since they’re small.”
RANDOM MOMENT Vendor broke into song as I passed by. Requested Whitney Houston, since it was her birthday. He obliged, choosing I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
WHAT I LEARNED Yellow watermelon … who knew?
WHY I’LL RETURN Delightful service from all vendors, and creativity-inducing photo opportunities. It’s wonderful meeting the farmers who grow our food, and hyperlocal entrepreneurs.
REMINDER Carry small bills, lots of change, and water.
