Helene Campbell, feds offer new help for transplant patients, families

A new national transplantation research program will enhance the survival and quality of life of Canadians needing organ and tissue transplants.

Federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq made the announcement at the Ottawa Hospital Monday morning.

With 4,500 Canadians on a waiting list each year, the program will provide important information to guide the development of policies, said Aglukkaq.

Double-lung transplant recipient Helene Campbell was also on hand for the press conference. Her campaign to promote organ donation went viral and gained international recognition when it was supported by celebrities such as Justin Bieber and Ellen DeGeneres.

The Ottawa woman has continued to be a major proponent of organ donation causes.

“I am thrilled and excited that this is being launched,” said Campbell, who recently turned 22.
