Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi won’t run for Liberal leadership

Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi is a dad first.

Naqvi announced Sunday he’s not seeking the leadership of the Ontario Liberals, primarily because of his son five-month-old son, Rafi.

“I had to think long and hard. First and foremost, I am Rafi’s dad, and being a father is my most important new job,” Naqvi said in a statement.

It wasn’t an easy decision, said Naqvi, adding he believes in the Liberals and “stands behind the good work our government has done.”

Premier Dalton McGuinty resigned on Oct. 15, proroguing the Legislature but he’ll remain the MPP for Ottawa South.

Naqvi called it a “pivotal time” in the party, “and it is important that we ensure the leadership race is transparent, fair and robust. I know many of my colleagues are considering entering the race, and I wish them all the best of luck in their deliberations,” he said.

A leadership convention is scheduled for the weekend of Jan. 25, 2013. The convention will be a delegated event.

Naqvi remains as Liberal party president.
